Pfizer Drug Approved For Treatment of Fibromyalgia – Symptoms Relieved Using Lyrica Capsules CV – Pain Management

Lyrica®

(Best Syndication) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Thursday approved the drug Lyrica® (pregabalin) capsules CV for the management of fibromyalgia. Fiberomyalgia is a common chronic, widespread pain condition in the United States. The symptoms for Fibermyalgia include, but are not limited to, diffuse or specific muscle, joint, or bone pain, fatigue (see Videos Below).

It is believed that fibromyalgia is a result of neurological changes in how the patients perceive pain. Sufferers will have a heightened sensitivity to stimuli which are not normally painful. Lyrica binds with a specific protein within overexcited nerve cells and works to calm damaged nerves. The company admits that they are not sure exactly how the mechanism works.

[Best Syndication] Studies were presented at the EULAR 2007, the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain which pinpointed a number of different risk factors for a person to develop rheumatoid arthritis. These risk factors include both environmental as well as genetic risk factors that can contribute to rheumatoid arthritis. Smoking, the level of education, and metabolic indicators all contribute to the risk factors for developing the disease.

One study showed that smoking increased the risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis with an odds ratio of 1.77; 95% confidence interval 1.13 to 2.78. This study also showed a relationship with education and rheumatoid risk factor. If a person had only an elementary school education only when compared against a university degree education had an odds ratio of 2.46 confidence interval 1.20 to 5.02. The researchers point out that education factor alone may increase the risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis.

[Best Syndication] A study was presented at the EULAR 2007, the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain that discussed the benefits of breast feeding and reduced risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis. Mothers that breast feed for at least thirteen months had a reduced risk for developing the disease. The researchers did not see any relationship to risk factors for oral contraceptive use or hormone replacement therapy with the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

“Whilst other studies suggest that hormonal factors play a part in the development of RA, and we know that pregnancy can result in an improvement in RA symptoms, we wanted to investigate the long term effect of breast-feeding,” said the lead researcher Dr Mitra Keshavarz, of Malmö Hospital University, Sweden. “This study specifically highlights the potential of naturally-induced hormones in protecting individuals from developing RA in the future. Furthermore, it adds to the growing body of evidence in favor of breast feeding and its positive health implications – this time demonstrating its protective benefits for the mother.”

[Best Syndication] A study that was presented at the EULAR 2007 which hosts the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain explained that alcohol may help reduce the chances of developing rheumatoid arthritis. The benefits were seen when a person drank three servings of alcohol a week and when there was ten units a week there was even more protection. Smoking and genetic predisposition to rheumatoid arthritis were reduced when individuals drank three or more units a week.

The research showed that the odds ratio 0.5, 95%; confidence interval 0.4 – 0.7 was seen with the increased consumption of alcohol of three or more units per week. The researchers believe that this lifestyle link could prove beneficial for finding new ways to understand rheumatoid arthritis.
